A significant peace initiative made its way through western St. Louis County communities on May 15. The Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run traveled through Manchester, Ellisville and Wildwood along Manchester Road, promoting messages of peace, unity and goodwill.
Since its inception in 1987, this international event has carried an Olympic-style Peace Torch to communities worldwide. The initiative involves runners traveling through more than 100 countries to share peace messages with community leaders, educational institutions and residents.
Manchester’s Mayor Ben Toben and his staff received the torch warmly, issuing a proclamation that recognized the Peace Run’s mission and encouraged citizen participation in its peaceful message.
Ellisville’s former mayor and current City Council member Mike Roemerman participated in the event, carrying the Peace Torch from Ellisville city hall for approximately 2.3 miles before handing it off to Wildwood representatives.
“When the organizers reached out to the city, I learned about the event and realized how special it was,” Roemerman explained. “I researched their organization and found their mission to be nonpartisan—it’s simply about people living in a welcoming and inclusive society.”
Roemerman expressed admiration for the Peace Run’s organizational structure and the dedication of its volunteer participants traveling across the nation.
“Their cause is inspiring and the level of organization behind it is remarkable,” he noted. “With a core team, a couple support vehicles, and entirely private funding through donations, they manage to welcome local runners at each stop along their journey.”
Local police departments provided escort services as the group traveled along Manchester Road.
“We met the team near New Ballwin Road and escorted them to city hall, then continued to Wildwood City Hall,” Roemerman shared. “The individuals involved in this movement are genuinely wonderful people.”
This year, Peace Run organizers have aligned their mission with America’s 250th anniversary celebration. The nationwide initiative will cover more than 10,000 miles across all 50 states over a four-month period.
