“Ural Airlines” “Flight 178” Crashlanded: “Bird Strike” Accident August 15

Airline Disasters And Accidents: A Ural Airlines Airbus 321 crash lands in a field near Zhukovsky International Airport in Moscow Region of Russia, due to A Bird Strike Accident.

Ural Airlines Flight 178 was a scheduled passenger flight from Moscow–Zhukovsky to Simferopol, Crimea. On 15 August 2019, an Airbus A321 (VQ-BOZ) operating the flight suffered a bird strike after taking off from Zhukovsky and crash landed in a cornfield a few kilometers past the airport. Twenty-nine people were injured.

A passenger recorded the moment when a flock of gulls struck both CFM56-5 engines. The first birdstrike caused a complete loss of power in the left engine. A second birdstrike meant that the right engine was producing insufficient thrust to maintain flight.

The pilots decided to turn off both the engines and opted to make an emergency landing in a cornfield kilometers from the airport runway. The aircraft made a hard landing in the cornfield 2.77 nautical miles (5.13 km) from Zhukovsky International Airport. Everyone on board the flight survived. Fifty-five people received medical attention at the scene. Twenty-nine people were taken to hospital, of whom 23 people were injured. Six people were admitted as in-patients.

Shortly after the accident, Ural Airlines released a statement on Twitter stating:

“On flight U6178 Zhukovsky-Simferopol, when flying out of Zhukovsky, there was a large hit of birds in the engines of the aircraft. The plane made an emergency landing. Passengers and crew were not injured.”

The airline praised the professionalism of the pilots

A bird strike—sometimes called birdstrike, bird ingestion (for an engine), bird hit, or bird aircraft strike hazard (BASH)—is a collision between an airborne animal (usually a bird or bat) and a manmade vehicle, especially an aircraft. The term is also used for bird deaths resulting from collisions with structures such as power lines, towers and wind turbines (see Bird–skyscraper collisions and Towerkill).

Bird strikes are a significant threat to flight safety, and have caused a number of accidents with human casualties. There are over 13,000 bird strikes annually in the US alone. However, the number of major accidents involving civil aircraft is quite low and it has been estimated that there is only about 1 accident resulting in human death in one billion (109) flying hours. The majority of bird strikes (65%) cause little damage to the aircraft; however the collision is usually fatal to the bird(s) involved [Source]

What Are Bird Strike Countermeasures?

There are three approaches to reduce the effect of bird strikes.

  1. The vehicles can be designed to be more bird resistant
  2. The birds can be moved out of the way of the vehicle
  3. or the vehicle can be moved out of the way of the birds.
